Sarcophagus - Stone Coffin

A sarcophagus is a Stone Coffin. The word "sarcophagus" comes from the Greek words "Sarx" meaning "flesh", and "phagein" meaning "to eat", so the literal meaning of sarcophagus is "flesh-eating".

Sarcophagi were designed to be used mostly above ground and the ancient Greeks believed these stone coffins ate the flesh of a body which was placed in it. This was due to the Limestone used in these ancient coffins which had a corrosive effect on the flesh.
